Mitigating Visitor Impacts at UNESCO Global Geoparks
UNESCO Global Geoparks balance two closely connected goals: making remarkable geological landscapes accessible to visitors while protecting the features that make those places significant. This research examines how geoparks can better manage small-scale visitor impacts across sites that vary widely in their geology, durability, scientific importance and patterns of use.
The authors bring together existing research to propose an adaptable management framework built around understanding who visits and why, tailoring visitor experiences, encouraging responsible behaviour and strategically managing where activities occur. Rather than relying on a single conservation strategy, the framework emphasizes monitoring, education and ongoing adaptation to help geoparks protect geoheritage while continuing to welcome and engage the public.
